Must-See Contemporary Architecture in Copenhagen

The first image that comes to mind when we hear the name Copenhagen is the historic cobblestone streets with charming brightly-colored houses. However, Copenhagen has been at the forefront of the world of contemporary architecture thanks to adventurous and design-forward creations by world-famous architects like Bjarke Ingels, Arne Jacobsen, and Henning Larsen. Here are some of the must-see designs in Copenhagen’s cityscape.

1. 8House

Located in the modern Ørestad neighborhood, the 8House is a housing complex designed with community, activity, and family in mind. The building connects 476 homes with a one-kilometer long path and has two intimate interior courtyards serving as a natural meeting point for the residents. In 2011, the building has been selected as the winner of the Housing Category at the World Architecture Festival.

2. Kastrup Sea Bath

Located in the beautiful seaside park Amager Strandpark and offering stunning views of the Øresund Sound, the Kastrup Sea Bath is a beloved swimming and recreational space all year round. This wooden structure is shaped in a way that protects swimmers and divers against the wind and is equipped with changing facilities, showers, and diving boards.

3. The Black Diamond

The Black Diamond, which was built as an extension to the Royal Library, is located right by the harbor front in the inner city. The large black glass facade reflects the sky and the water on the outside and offers stunning views of the city for those working inside. Besides being a library, the building also houses a concert hall, a café, and The National Museum of Photography.

5. Axel Towers

The five fused Axel Towers with their flowing composition and infinite form are a striking landmark in Copenhagen’s central cityscape. The staggered towers house not only office spaces, but various public amenities like restaurants, cafés, and shops. The urban garden and tidy landscaping help make the towers a pleasurable space for people to hang out in.

4. Urban Rigger

Designed by the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), the Urban Rigger is a student housing project aimed at addressing the affordable housing shortage by utilizing the harbor. The housing is made up of floating shipping containers, which can be altered and replicated in other harbor cities. What is more, this student housing is located in the hip Refshaleøen area of the city, known for its street food market Reffen, the international art center Copenhagen Contemporary, and other creative and unique projects and businesses.
